After a poor start to the 2021-22 season, La Liga giants FC Barcelona appointed one of their club legends Xavi Hernandez as the new gaffer.
Xavi had a mixed start to his second innings at Barcelona. Under him, the Catalan giants managed to qualify for the next season’s UEFA Champions League by finishing second in La Liga.
However, they were knocked out from the group stage of the UEFA Champions League and also failed to win the Europa League. Barcelona then invested a lot of in the incomings throughout the last Summer transfer window.
They brought players like Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Raphinha, Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessie, Hector Bellerin and Marcos Alonso to Camp Nou.
Barcelona Gaffer Gives Indications of Winter Signings
The summer signings of Barcelona soon adapted to their new club. As a result, the Catalan giants have got a great start in La Liga. Xavi’s team won nine out of their first eleven matches. With twenty-eight points, they are currently in the second position in the league.
However, their performance in the UEFA Champions League has been the quite opposite. Barcelona won their first match in UCL. But after that, they suffered three losses in the next four matches. As a result, the Catalan giants have been relegated to the Europa League for the second season in a row.
With back-to-back failures in the European competition, there is currently immense pressure on the Spanish coach. While addressing the serious situation Xavi said, “We will not stop working and I notice total confidence in the project. It is not what we expected. We have very high expectations and we have lost the Champions League.”
The Barcelona gaffer admitted that the club is not in an ideal situation. Xavi has accepted all the criticism and thinks they will have to be patient and calm to get through this time. The Spanish gaffer also has the backing of Barcelona president Joan Laporta. Hence he wants to continue the project.
Now Barcelona are looking to strengthen their team with some incomings in the upcoming January transfer window. It has been recently reported that they want to sign a right-back and a defensive midfielder during the winter window.
Speaking about their plans for January, Xavi revealed, “It is still very early. It is true that the football management is working, but there is still a long way to go”.
Now the current target for Barcelona will be to not stumble anymore in La Liga so they can keep the pressure on the defending champions Real Madrid.
Barcelona will face Valencia in their next match. Xavi’s side will look to return back to the winnings ways against Los Che.
