FC Barcelona manager Xavi is hopeful the Catalan outfit can seal a place in the Champions League round of 16.
Barcelona finds themselves in a tricky position in the Champions League, with the Spanish side sitting third in Group C.
Barca have played three matches in the competition this season and have just three points. They kicked off their Champions League 22/23 campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.
However, they returned to winning ways when they took on Viktoria Plzen, cruising to a 5-1 win over the Czech outfit. But then they again fell to a defeat when they faced Milan in their third match of the group stage. The Italian side secured a 1-0 win over Barca in that game.
Group stage exit would be a ‘big disappointment’, admits Xavi
Barcelona host Inter Milan at Camp Nou in their next match in the Champions League. Ahead of that match, manager Xavi addressed the media.
Xavi admitted it would be a ‘big disappointment’ if Barcelona fail to make it to the round of 16. He also admitted the situation has become ‘complicated’ but is hopeful they can make it
“It would be a big disappointment not to go through, but we are thinking positively. It’s become complicated but we want to win tomorrow and stay alive in this competition,” Xavi said when asked about the possibility of Barcelona failing to qualify for round-of-16.
“It is not a comfortable situation for us because of the misses in Munich, the controversy in Milan, not attacking well (…) but tomorrow is an opportunity to fix that.”
Meanwhile, Bayern tops Group C with nine points from three matches. Inter Milan sits second with six points.
A win over Inter in the upcoming match would take Barcelona’s point tally to six – the same as that of Inter Milan. However, should Inter secure all three points, that would open up a six-point gap between the Italian side and Barcelona.
Barcelona will be aiming to register a win over the Serie A outfit and pocket all three points to boost their hopes and chances of progression to the next stage of the competition.
Meanwhile, Barcelona sits top of the La Liga points table with 22 points from eight matches. Arch-rivals Real Madrid also have 22 points, but Xavi’s men occupy the first place courtesy of superior goal difference
