Germany legend Lothar Matthäus has shared his thoughts on Hansi Flick’s move to Barcelona and has tipped the former Bayern boss to succeed.
Flick is expected to be announced as the club’s new manager next week following the departure of Xavi.
Matthaus thinks Flick is a great fit for the Catalans and will do a good job at the Camp Nou.
“I’m very happy for Hansi. He had been in contact with FC Barcelona for a long time, the club had put out feelers for him. Hansi was patient and can now go to an absolute world-class club,” he told Bild.
“Hansi’s style suits Barcelona. He wants his teams to play offensively and attractively. With ter Stegen, Gündogan and Lewandowski, he immediately has three people he can relate to, which is important. He made Ilkay Gündogan captain at the DFB, which speaks for their special relationship.”
Flick may have to work under financial constraints at Barcelona, but Matthaus feels that is not a problem and he can go on to build a very special team.
“Barcelona has very talented players and, despite the difficult economic situation, always finds ways to make transfers. In addition, there are many gems in the club that Hansi, who is known as a talent promoter, will polish,” he added.
“Barcelona stood for spectacle and great football under Pep Guardiola. Hansi can bring that magic back.”
It’s thought that Flick has been keen to manage Barcelona for a long time, and he’ll finally get his chance next season as he returns to management for the first time since leaving his role as Germany boss.
