La Liga president Javier Tebas has aimed a dig at Ligue 1, claiming that Lionel Messi now attracts lesser eyeballs since he plays in the French top flight.
Messi left Barcelona in the summer of 2021 after his contract with Barcelona had expired. The Argentine wanted to continue at the Catalan outfit. But Barca were unable to extend his contract due to ‘financial and structural obstacles’.
Messi moved to Paris Saint-Germain in the 2021 summer transfer window, joining the French outfit on a two-year contract with an option to extend it by another year. The 35-year-old has since been playing for PSG.
And after a rather difficult first season at PSG, Messi has looked back to his best in the 22/23 campaign.
Lionel Messi is missed in football – Javier Tebas takes a dig at Ligue 1
When asked whether he misses Messi in La Liga, Tebas took a swipe at Ligue 1. He said the Argentine is not missed just in La Liga, but also in football.
Tebas also claimed the Argentine is followed ‘much less’ at PSG than he was at FC Barcelona.
“I think that Messi is not only missed in La Liga but he is also missed in football, because the French league is what it is, right? And there is no more, I think that no matter how much he is at PSG, he is followed much less than when he was at Fútbol Club Barcelona,” Tebas said at the Ole Sports Summit.
He added that he hopes Messi has a great World Cup, and he said football fans will again be able to see him.
Tebas also admitted he misses Messi and hopes the Argentine will return to La Liga and Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Messi has been sensational for PSG in the 22/23 season. Messi has so far featured in 17 games across all competitions for PSG so far this season. And he has racked up 12 goals for the French outfit. He has also registered 13 assists for PSG.
In Ligue 1, Messi has made 12 appearances for PSG in the 22/23 season and has amassed seven goals. He has also provided 10 assists in the French top flight.
In the Champions League, Messi has featured in 4 games and has scored four goals for PSG. His other goal for PSG this season came at the start of the campaign. He scored for PSG in their 4-0 win over Nantes in the Trophee des Champions.
