Serie-A giants Juventus want to bolster their forward line with the arrival of Dutch international Memphis Depay from Barcelona.
After spending some time in the academy of Sparta Rotterdam, Memphis Depay joined the youth setup of PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch forward then graduated from the PSV academy and was promoted to the main team.
Upon his promotion, the forward soon became an important part of the PSV team. He helped PSV to win the the Eredivisie in 2014-15 season, their first title since 2008. Memphis finished as the golden boot winner and also the Dutch Footballer of the year. The forward then joined English Premier League side Manchester United.
After joining United, Depay never reached the level of football, he played at PSV. So after two years, he was sold to Ligue 1 side, Lyon. Here the forward got back his form. He stayed four seasons at the French club and netted 76 goals for them. Finally, Memphis Depay joined Barcelona at the start of the last season.
Juventus Keen to Sign Depay
Now according to a report from the Sport, Serie-A club Juventus want to sign Dutch forward Memphis Depay from La Liga side FC Barcelona during the upcoming January transfer window.
After dominating the Serie-A for a whole decade, Juventus have failed to finish in the top three during their last two terms. And even this around they have got a very start. The Bianconeri have won only six out of their first twelve matches. With twenty-two points, they are currently in the sixth position in the table.
Their condition in the European competition is even poor. For the first time in its history, Juventus have lost four out of the first five matches in the UEFA Champions League. As a result, they have been knocked out from the group stage of UCL and even their participation in the Europa is currently not confirmed.
Now Juventus management understands this situation very well. They want to sign multiple players in the upcoming January window to secure at least a top-four finish.
After having a bright start in Barcelona, Memphis Depay faded away in the second half of the last season. Barcelona then signed Polish striker Robert Lewandowski in the last summer window. As a result, Depay had to play a second-fiddle role.
Due to this, Depay wanted to move out of the club the last summer. Juventus were the closest to signing him. But the deal never materialised. Depay stayed at Barca and had made only two appearances so far. With Barcelona having financial issues, the Catalan Giants are once again looking to sell him in the January window.
This gives Juventus another chance to secure the forward. Depay is currently nursing an injury that the forward suffered in the last international window. He is expected to regain his fitness before the Qatar World Cup 2022.
Juventus will face Paris Saint-Germain in their next match. The Bianconeri will hope for a good result to secure their Europa League berth.
