- EXCLUSIVE from Graeme Bailey
HITC understands that a number of Premier League clubs have been alerted to the possible availability of Dutch star Frenkie De Jong this summer.
Barcelona have always made it clear they would like to keep Frenkie De Jong, but as one of the club’s highest earners and most sellable assets – they accept that if they want to spend, they will also have to sell.
De Jong, back in the summer of 2022, was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United as Erik ten Hag was seeking a new controlling midfielder who could be dominant in possession.
There were times when the deal felt close to being completed but in the end, the former Ajax midfielder remained at the Camp Nou but it seems his future could well be called into question again.
Barcelona’s acceptance
HITC understands that the Spanish giants are aware that they can’t hold on to all of their key assets at the club, especially if they want to make signings of their own in the off-season.
Barcelona have accepted that sales may well be needed but there are only three first-team players who are considered untouchable, they are Pedri, Gavi and Yamine Lamal.
HITC understands that the reason why De Jong’s move to Old Trafford was never finalised was due to huge money being owed to the Dutchman after he accepted a delay in salary during the Covid crisis.
The Red Devils remain admirers of the Dutchman but Chelsea, who were also previously keen, have invested huge money into the midfield department and it remains to be seen if they would try their luck with the Dutchman this summer.
Saudi and Premier League interest
As well as United and Chelsea, sources have confirmed that Arsenal and Manchester City have asked to be kept informed of any developments.
However, despite European interest, HITC has also been told that the Saudi Pro League would ‘love’ to land the 26-year-old but De Jong’s preference, at this moment in time, is to remain in Europe.
Barcelona sporting director Deco spoke to Spanish radio station EsportE about the club’s desire to hold onto their key players.
“We’d like not to sell any top player in the summer. It’d be a mistake to sell Araujo and Frenkie de Jong. I’d like to improve the squad… not to sell players,” Deco said.
“We wouldn’t like (having to sell any players) the truth… If we have to make any moves in the squad, they must be moves to balance the squad and to be able to bring other players.”
