Girona winger Savio is now a target for La Liga giants Barcelona after Arsenal missed out on the chance to bring the Brazilian to the Premier League.
OK, Girona’s remarkable start to the current campaign might not be the fairytale story some have labelled it. They are not Spain’s answer to Leicester City circa 2016. Savio, or Savinho if you like, is one of many Girona players owned by the City Football Group, after all, joining the Premier League champions for £5.5 million last year before moving to Spain on loan.
Still, regardless of his City-owned status, 19-year-old Savio – like most of his team-mates – is performing well above expectations. Girona level on points with Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table.
The teenager has seven goals or assists in 11 domestic games, his dazzling performances catching the eye of a Barcelona side who’s head coach Xavi Hernandez is prioritising a new left winger in 2024.
Arsenal missed out on Barcelona target Savio
Sporting director Deco, Sport adds, has been aware of Savio since he exploded onto the scene at Atletico Mineiro as a 16-year-old. Deco is reportedly a big fan of his versatility and his left-footedness, Savio potentially offering greater balance on the flank.
Savio has arguably been the best in his position anywhere in Spain’s top flight this term, comparisons with Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior well earned.
“The sporting management had been following ‘Savinho’ since the last Under 20 World Cup. We had excellent views (of him), despite him having just come back from a season without enchanting at PSV Eindhoven,” explains Michel, the coach who has led Girona to nine wins out of 11 games (Calciomercato).
“We had the feeling that he could be the right player for us. I’ll say one big thing; since Vinicius’ arrival in Spain, I haven’t seen such a great one-on-one talent like him.”
‘Arsenal wanted me’
Speaking to Sport not so long ago, Savio confirmed that Arsenal ‘wanted me’ before he joined the City Football Group a year ago. Maintain his current form and soon we could be discussing Savio in the same breath as some of Arsenal’s greatest missed opportunities, from Cristiano Ronaldo to Eden Hazard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic to N’Golo Kante.
